Providence Health & Services RN - Acute in Valdez, Alaska


Providence is calling a Registered Nurse (RN) Staff (Medical/Surgical, Night Shift, 0.9 FTE) to Providence Valdez Medical Center in Valdez, Alaska. In this position you will:

  • Assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate patient’s care to achieve patient goals and to optimize outcomes.

  • Effectively advocate for ethical and holistic care to promote the autonomy, dignity, rights, values and beliefs of those we serve.

  • Foster a learning environment for patient/families, nursing, and other members of the healthcare team including students.

  • Align practice with safety and quality.

  • Be accountable for safety, identify and correct problems.

  • Engage in ongoing professional development; promote a culture of inquiry that explores, integrates and disseminates research and evidence based practice.

  • Lead and coordinate teams, delegate, coordinate care and collaborate with others as equal members of the inter-professional care team to integrate nursing knowledge.

  • PATIENT CARE EVALUATION, PLAN, and EDUCATION PROCESS: Works closely with clinical and interdisciplinary teams to understand clinical realities as they interface with psychosocial needs. Plans and provides discharge planning and other services to address patient/family needs identified in assessment. Matches patients with appropriate internal and external resources to meet their ongoing needs, and facilitates application(s) for programs and referrals for special needs. Educates patient and family regarding psychosocial aspects of specific illness or disability. Provides documentation that supports and communicates the plan and progress of care.

  • RISK EVALUATION PROCESS: Assists in decreasing liability risk factors for the institution by applying quality screens to medical records and analyzing data for potential risks. Communicates findings to Risk Management Representative, specific individuals, or departments.

  • COMMUNICATION: Consults, collaborates with, and values team members and other health professionals to plan and assure transfer of timely information, in order to meet patient and family needs in a seamless, safe, and effective process. Initiates, attends, and participates in patient care and inter-disciplinary rounds, conferences, team meetings, and case management/division meetings. Establishes and maintains relationships with community service providers to facilitate the care plan and continuity of care. Uses peer mediation process to advocate for/with patients, families, physicians, community resources, consultants, and peers.

  • EDUCATOR/CONSULTANT: Educates, consults for, and learns from the Medical Staff and other health care providers in regards to the fiscal impact of their practice. Partners with physicians for benchmark and best practices. In collaborating with the multidisciplinary team, becomes the expert and overseer of discharge processes for patients/residents.

  • Prepares, administers and charts routine and emergency medication and treatment according to physicians' orders and established procedures. Maintains accurate records of medication/treatments.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Nursing degree/diploma upon hire

  • Current unencumbered RN license with the State of Alaska.

  • eBLS certified; ACLS certified required (certification within 6 months of hire, renew biannually or recertification within 6 months after expire date)

  • Must be flexible to be able to work days, evenings, nights, and weekends, be on-call and be called back.

  • Able to challenge him/herself to continually grow professionally and maintain and expand her/himself competence and expertise in all aspects of the clinical are

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • 1 year experience in Nursing or case management.

About the Providence Valdez Medical Center

Providence Valdez Medical Center is a 21 bed Critical Access Hospital and we employ about 100 people (87 FTE’s). Of those 21 beds, 10 are licensed Long Term Care beds and 11 are Acute/Swing Beds. We have four physicians on our active medical staff who practice out of the Valdez Medical Clinic. Our average daily census is three-four inpatients and 20-30 outpatients. Our facility contains an emergency room, labor room, post-partum, nursery, cardiac room, orthopedic, and med/surg rooms. We also have an operating room for emergency surgeries and elective procedures, C-sections, hernias and appendectomies. All our beds are licensed for “swing bed” status of which 1-3 are usually occupied.
